How do you get a good composition in a watercolour painting? Part 1 colour

What makes a good painting?

I am self-taught even though I went to art college and got a Bachelor's and Master's degree.

Through painting endlessly for years on end I have I think learnt about what makes a good composition for a painting.

Depth

By using cool and warm colours you can create a feeling of depth in a painting. The cool colours, greys and blues in the distance imitate atmospheric effects which creates a feeling of a moment in the painting.

This was a Plein Air painting I made recently at Penclawdd on the Gower in Wales.

As you can see here, the distant trees etc have created a feeling of depth in the painting because they are a blue/grey colour

In this one as well you can see that the field in front has quite vivid colours but the mountain behind is a faded grey/blue.

In the next post I will talk about tone.
